Piqua girls basketball coach Rory Hoke knew the key to Saturday’s game would be slowing Meadowdale down.

And the Lady Indians couldn’t do it often enough in a 61-49 loss at Edison Community College Saturday afternoon.

“We knew they could score quickly in transition,” Hoke said. “We knew we had to get people back in the paint to do that. We just didn’t do a very good job of that.”

And there were several key memoments where Meadowdale put points on the board quickly.

After Piqua had gotten in to an early 11-3 hole, the Lady Indians got untracked and baskets by Macy Yount and Katie Allen pulled the Indians to within 19-18.

“We were able to hit some shots and get back in the game,” Hoke said.

But, Meadowdale scored the final eigth points of the half and the opening two points of the third quarter to go up 29-18.

“And almost all of those points came in transition,” Hoke said.

Meadowdale would use a 23-point third quarter to open a 50-33 lead, capped by Nottia Ward’s mid-court bomb to close the quarter.

“That was a big shot,” Hoke said. “That made it a 17-point game. But, again we just didn’t do a good job on defense (in the quarter). I don’t know if any team gives up points like we do coming out of the locker room.”

Piqua got it down to 10 in the closing minutes, but that was as close as the Lady Indians would get.

“We had some positives,” Hoke said. “Macy Yount had a big game and Kayla Schrubb really battled in there and had another double-double. But, our defense and rebounding really concerns me right now.”

Yount had 20 points, while Schrubb added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Indians. Allen grabbed six rebounds and Morgen Grunkemeyer pulled down five.

Ward had a big game for the Lions, scoring 17 of her 25 points in the second half and pulling down 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Ja’la Henderson scored 14 points and Precious Brown had eight points and seven rebounds.

Jocelyn Martin had 10 rebounds and Antaia Allen grabbed nine.

Piqua was 17 of 60 from the floor for 28 percent and 11 of 26 from the line for 42 percent.

Meadowdale was 24 of 59 from the floor for 41 percent and 12 of 27 from the line for 44 percent.

The Lady Lions won the battle of the boards 45-26, but had 17 turnovers to Piqua’s 12.

The Lady Indians won the JV game 31-15.

Maddy Curtner scored 12 points and Jordan Booker added eight.

Piqua will be back in action Wednesday at Vandalia.
