Mother Nature gave Miami East students an extended holiday break, but the January reorganizational board meeting went on as planned Tuesday evening at Miami East High School.

Board members Kevin Accurso, Mark Davis, Rusty Miller, Brad Burton and Brandon Fellers, treasurer Lisa Fahncke and superintendent Todd Rappold were all present. Also in attendance was parent Tricia Fellers, staff member Barb Minnich and Wes Welbaum, elementary principal.

Davis was announced as the new board president, taking over for Accurso, while Burton was elected vice president. The 2014 committee appointments were announced with the following people in each spot; OSBA (Legislative Liaison & Student Achievement Liasison): Kevin Accurso, MVCTC: Mark Davis, Athletic Council: Rusty Miller, Facilities: Mark Davis, Alumni Hall of Fame: Brad Burton, Miami East Foundation: Brandon Fellers, Audit Commitee: All members of the Miami East Board of Education.

In good news recognition, Rappold spoke about VikingFest 2014, which will be from 10 a.n. to 3 p.m. Feb. 15 in the K-8th grade building. The event will feature family entertainment, free admission and free stage entertainment. Tickets for games will cost 25 cents each or five for $1. After-Prom parents will sell sandwiches and other items.

The event helps fund student scholarship and school personnel grants to support learning activities for East students. Rappold encouraged vendors with unique products to contact Beth at (937) 335-2771 or at bethculb@woh.rr.com.

In the treasurer’s report, Fahncke presented the approval of the Alternative Tax Document, and authorization of contractual payments, authorize payment of bills, request advance of taxes, borrow funds, and to apply for, appropriate and expand grant. Both items were approved.

Accurso moved and Rusty Miller seconded the motion to appoint Accurso to serve as the Ohio School Board Association Student Achievement Liaison and appoint Fellers as the Ohio School Board Association Legislative Liaison for the East Local School District for 2014.

The following board/consent agenda items also were included: the minutes of regular board meetings of Dec. 16, 2013, as presented (every third Monday of each month, except February, which will happen on the third Tuesday), the financial reports for the month of December and the then and now Treasurer’s 412 certifications. The board approved cash donations as follows: $200 donation from the Fletcher Lions Club for the high school choir.

Rappold presented employment items in his report. The board approved the following items: the hiring of Lorraine Smith as bus drive for the 2013-14 school year, effective Jan. 6. The board approved substitute teachers who have been approved by the Miami County Educational Service Center, and on file in the central office. Blake Heim was approved as a junior high boys basketball volunteer coach.

Also on the superintendent’s agenda was getting approval for an out-of-state trip for the current school year. Miami East High School FFA will take a trip to Fair Oaks, Ind., on March 26-27.

In other news: the 10th annual Miami East Staff Appreciation Night will be Jan 24, Miami East Alumni Hall of Fame nominations are due by Jan. 31, and applications can be picked up in the board office.

There was an update on the E-Calamity Day plan. By Jan. 19, make-up lessons will either be posted on the school website or sent home with students. Students and parents are advised to be aware of the location of these lessons. Any questions can be directed to the school office.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 18.
