PIQUA —A new year means another tax season and though April 15 seems a long way off now, it will arrive as certain as death and, well, taxes. For those who may not be able to afford an accountant for tax preparation aid is available thanks to the volunteers of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

AARP offers free tax aid to low and moderate income individuals and families, especially those 60 and older, at a variety of host locations.

In the immediate area, the YMCA at 226 W. High St., is working on their third year as host to AARP tax-aide volunteers. They are available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday, until April 14, with approximately five to six volunteers on hand.

Walk-ins are welcome and those interested in this free service do not have to be a member of AARP.

For those outside the Piqua area, locations include the Troy public library, hosting from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Thursday at 419 W. Main St., walk-ins only, and the Troy Senior Citizens Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at 133 N. Market St. The center asks that individuals bring a government issued photo ID and their social security cards for all family members, with a notation that if Troy schools close due to bad weather, the center closes also, with walk-ins welcome.

The Sidney/Shelby County Senior Center has aid available from 9 am. to 2 p.m., every Monday and Tuesday, at 304 S. West Ave., Sidney. Given the approximate four volunteers on hand for the free service, those interested are asked to call for an appointment at (937) 492-5266.

The Amos Memorial Public Library has been host to the AARP tax aid program for the last 15 years. The program begins this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will run every Saturday until tax deadline at 230 E. North St., Sidney. As three volunteers are on hand an appointment is required by calling (937) 492-8354.

According to AARP, this service has been provided for 45 years, is the nation’s largest free tax-assistance and preparation service, and helped over 115,000 across the state of Ohio with their income tax refunds last year.
