PIQUA — Don’t look now, says Bill Lutz, development program manager, but the city of Piqua has been nominated as a contender for “City of the Year” by GovFresh.

Lutz entered Piqua for award consideration with the recent nomination having, “Kind of caught fire” as GovFresh chose the city as a finalist against several other much larger communities: Buenos Aires, Argentina, Salt Lake City, Utah, and New York City.

GovFresh is looking for communities that do a good job of engaging citizens with some focus on technology. Or as stated by Lutz in a recent email … the city that best fostered civic collaboration, innovation and inspiration in 2013. Judges will consider the collective efforts of city government and local civic organizations, developers and entrepreneurs.

Lutz’s nomination emphasized Piqua as a recipient of the Ohio City/County Management Association award for it’s work with the CitizenNet Program, along with the Piqua Government Academy, “which has had over 70 residents go through an experience rich program outlining city services.”

However, not much time is left for voting as the deadline is Saturday.

“We’re pretty good for a city of 20,000,” said Lutz as votes so far have placed the city into first place. The panel of GovFresh judges will make a final decision and announcement of the winner on Dec. 18. “We hope the judges will notice we are very good at engaging and working with limited resources.”

The city has made a big push with postings on Twitter and Facebook as Lutz stated, “We’ve got to hold our own.”
