PIQUA — The smiling face of Dr. Louis A. Schmidt, MD, has been the last thing hundreds of area residents have witnessed just before going under the effects of anesthesia for surgery.
While achieving a golden wedding anniversary is an accomplishment, this year Schmidt celebrated his golden work anniversary as a physician and anesthesiologist.
He is currently working out of the Valley Regional Surgery Center, 283 Looney Road, Piqua, where he administers anesthesia for surgeries.
“There are probably other anesthesiologists that have worked for 50 years, but I am not familiar with them,” he said. “I am not going to say it was my goal, but my father worked in industry and it hit me the other day that I mimicked him, just in a different specialty. That’s what makes me the proudest, just being able to make that accomplishment in life. I didn’t set out to make that accomplishment.”
Schmidt, 79, of Sidney, received his medical degree from The Ohio State University, College of Medicine, in 1960.
After performing an internship at Huron Hospital in Cleveland in the early 1960s, Schmidt later completed his residency requirements at both the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at the Jacobi Center, Bronx, N.Y., and the Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas, for anesthesiology.
In addition, Schmidt served in the U.S. Navy from August of 1961 to July of 1964 as a flight surgeon.
Over his accomplished career Schmidt has worn many hats, from being a director of anesthesiology to being a chairman of medical departments. His career has taken him all over the country, including Albuquerque, N.M., and Jackson, Mich., among other locales.
He moved to the area in 2004 for a job opportunity in the Miami-Shelby county area, at Wilson Memorial Hospital and then at Valley Regional Surgery Center.
Schmidt said his time in the Navy and an interest in the field of anesthesiology is what first led him down the path on his 50-year journey in the field of medicine.
Over his illustrious career in the field of anesthesiology, Schmidt has reached many career milestones and had more than his fair share of accomplishments, but two things he has always enjoyed are the patients and his colleagues.
“I have enjoyed working with various doctors and nurses,” Schmidt said, “and also all of the patients over the years.”
One thing he attributed his career longevity to was how he moved around frequently in his career.
“If moving around wasn’t so frequent in my life I might have retired by now,” he said.
He has worked at Valley Regional Surgery Center for the past 10 years.
Gayle Holthaus, a surgical nurse at Valley Regional Surgery Center, said she has enjoyed working alongside Schmidt at the surgery center.
“Dr. Schmidt is such a great guy,” she said. “He’s funny, and he has a great sense of humor. He is always a pleasure to work around and he is just an all-around good guy.”
Schmidt and his wife, Kathy, have been married for 36 years and they have three children between them.
