PIQUA — The Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce Manufacturing Council members were treated to a tour of the Evenflo manufacturing facility on Wednesday, Feb. 19, with plant manager Robin Guerin and Alan Wagner, plant facilities manager, leading the way.
Evenflo Company Inc., a Chamber member, has been in the Piqua community since 1958, and in its current location at 1801 Commerce Drive since 1973. Production of various car seats and ExerSaucer stationary activity centers is done at its local facility. The company is proud of its lean manufacturing practices, allowing for costs to be reduced and for Evenflo to remain competitive in the international market.
Safety is Evenflo’s top priority. Lining the walls just inside the plant entrance are testimonial letters from families whose children and grandchildren survived terrible crashes due to the quality of Evenflo’s car seats. These letters are regularly shared with employees to reinforce the continuous need for quality assurance. The Piqua location performs in-house crash testing at a state-of-the-art sled lab, where employees can review information within five minutes after a test is completed, versus a 1-2 day delay when testing is performed by an outside company. In addition, a number of other quality and safety tests are performed on-site, including flammability and material durability testing.
On the tour, chamber members were taken on a tour of the plant where approximately 285 employees work. Each day, the plant builds about 10,000 units and 30-50 semi-tractor trailers leave the plant loaded with finished goods. The products are shipped to more than 1,200 customers, including Toys R Us, WalMart, Target, Amazon, Burlington, and Kmart. The company is also witnessing an increase in the number of online orders and is adjusting to the new demand.
Manufacturing Council meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. All large and small manufacturers are invited to participate. As a value-added benefit to members of the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce, there is no fee to participate. The annual fee to non-chamber members will be $200. Contact the Chamber at 773-2765 for more information about this and other programs.
