Parishes schedule May crownings
PIQUA — Piqua’s Catholic churches have scheduled the following May crownings:
• Tuesday, May 2, after the 8:15 Mass in St. Clare Chapel at St. Boniface Church (310 S. Downing)
• Wednesday, May 3, 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary Church (528 Broadway)
• Wednesday, May 10, 7 p.m., St. Boniface.
Beginning in the sixteenth century, the Roman Catholic Church has honored the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, during the month of May. Mary is celebrated as the “Queen of May” because she was the perfect follower of Jesus Christ and the absolute “crown” of creation.
Traditionally, the May Crowning ritual includes a procession, music, prayer, and the crowning of the statue of Mary with a wreath of flowers.
