CASSTOWN — On Feb. 9, the Miami County FFA Public Speaking Career Development Event was held at Upper Valley Career Center in Piqua in coincidence with the Shelby County FFA competition.
In the FFA Creed event FFA members memorized, recited and answered questions on the FFA Creed. First place went to Jessica Gillum from Miami East. Second place went to Emily Peck from Milton-Union. Third went to Spencer Selhorst from Miami East. Fourth went to Lexi Oburn from Newton FFA.
In the Beginning Prepared event FFA members researched, wrote, and presented a 5-7 minute agriculture speech then answered questions. First place went to Emily Thimmes from Miami East. Second place went to Rachel LaMarr from Upper Valley Career Center FFA.
In the Advanced Prepared Speaking event FFA members researched, wrote, and presented a 6-8 minute agriculture speech then answered questions. Jese Shell from Covington FFA was the first place presenter.
In the Extemporaneous Speaking event FFA members pull a topic from an approved list, are given 30 minutes to prepare a 4-6 minute speech on that topic, and then answer questions. First place went to Abigail Hissong from Milton Union. Second went to Dillon Underwood from Upper Valley Career Center. Third place went to Kyle Elifritz from Miami East.
The top two FFA members in each area will advance to the District Public Speaking competition next week hosted at Milton-Union High School. The Agricultural Education Programs at Milton-Union and Miami East are satellites of the Miami Valley Career Technology Center. The Agricultural Education Programs at Newton and Covington are satellite of Upper Valley Career Center.
