PIQUA — A new Mexican restaurant has joined the strip mall east of Interstate 75, looking to provide restaurant goers with a variety of Mexican dishes, along with new favorites not seen elsewhere in the area.
El Tequila Bar and Grill recently opened at 1274 E. Ash St., taking over the former El Sombrero location in Piqua near Walmart and giving it a new look.
“We redid the whole place,” Gustavo Ramirez, the owner, said.
Ramirez, along with managers Jose Diaz and Rafael Ramirez, remodeled the the restaurant over the course of three months, replacing the tile work, remodeling the restrooms, and filling the restaurant with new decor and artwork imported from Mexico.
“I’ve been working at restaurants for 10 years,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez, who is from Urbana, is the son of the owner of La Palma in Urbana.
“This is a whole new menu, a whole new concept,” he said.
Standout items at El Tequila Bar and Grill include a mango pico de gallo, a flaming fajita, and a pineapple deluxe. The pineapple deluxe includes a half a pineapple and comes with food in the pineapple.
“No one around here has one,” Ramirez said about the flaming fajita and the pineapple deluxe. “I just want to do something different.”
El Tequila Bar and Grill also offers a tableside guacamole, which is made to order at the customers’ tables in front of them.
“We have a drink menu,” Ramirez said, noting that the menu includes a homemade sangria.
The atmosphere has been a positive one at El Tequila Bar and Grill so far.
“So far, everybody’s reacting great,” Ramirez said. “I’m proud of what we’ve done here.”
