MIAMI COUNTY — In 2001, a Piqua Kiwanis guest speaker sparked an interest in Wayne Flory, then chairman of the club’s Young Children Priority One (YCPO) committee.

“The speaker spoke of the need for new mothers leaving UVMC Maternity and not having ready access to acceptable car seats for their new infants,” Flory said. “I knew this was a perfect project for our club.”

Dan Patrizio, then president of the club, along with Upper Valley Medical Center Maternity personnel and the board members, all gave their enthusiastic approval and the project was begun.

In 2009, as the need for car seats at UVMC increased, the Troy Kiwanis Club joined in the effort with the Piqua Kiwanis Club to meet the growing needs of mothers needing a safe car seat before taking their infants home from the hospital.

“Evenflo has been a great resource for us since the inception of the project,” Mark Wion, current Piqua Kiwanis YCPO chairman said. “They have been able to help us purchase a safe car seat so that mothers in need will have one to take their infant home.”

Ron Erwin of the Troy Kiwanis echoed Wion’s sentiments. “We are proud and excited to be a part of this joint venture and know that the money we raise from our fundraisers is helping a mother in need,” Erwin said.

“This is a tremendous service that the Piqua and Troy Kiwanis Clubs provide for some of our mothers,” Wendy Reese, RN nurse manager in the Birthing Center at UVMC, said. “Those that receive the car seats are grateful to receive the seats to enable them to take their babies home from the hospital.”
