PIQUA — Two victims were transported from the scene of a crash, one by CareFlight, late Thursday evening.

Piqua first responders were dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and Park Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. on the report of a crash involving several vehicles, with at least one person possibly ejected.

CareFlight was immediately placed on standby as units responded to the crash scene.

Piqua police arrived to find three vehicles involved in the crash and two of the involved subjects injured. Piqua Fire Department medics arrived a minute after and soon summoned CareFlight to meet them at the American Legion Landing Zone near the fire station.

A medic unit from Covington was called for mutual aid to transport the second victim.

Lt. Rick Byron of the Piqua Police Department said that preliminary findings, based on witness accounts, are that a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Ryan Jacob Street, 30, of Troy, was northbound on Broadway at an apparent high rate of speed when it failed to stop at a red light and “t-boned” a westbound car driven by Jaime McCarty, 24, of Piqua. The impact spun McCarty’s car around and it stopped on the sidewalk on the west side of Broadway. Momentum carried Street north on Broadway, where his vehicle struck a parked car. Both vehicles came to rest near the street approximately 50 yards north of the intersection.

Street was transported by Piqua medics to the American Legion landing zone where he was transferred to CareFlight and taken to Miami Valley Hospital. His condition is not known. McCarty was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center by the Covington Rescue Squad.

Chief Bruce Jamison said that several bystanders witnessed a subject run from Street’s SUV following the crash. Anyone who might be able to identify the subject is asked to contact Officer Alexander at 937-778-2027 ext. 3008.

Street will face one charge of Driving while under and OVI Suspension. Additional charges may be pending.

Byron said that, at this time, alcohol is not known to be a causative factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
