PLEASANT HILL — A crash claimed the life of a motorcyclist late Sunday evening.
The driver was identified as 48-year-old Todd Oda of Auglaize County.
Deputies from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, along with fire and EMS units from Pleasant Hill, were dispatched to the 3000 block of State Route 48, approximately one-half mile north of Sugar Grove Road, at 10:43 p.m. on the report of a motorcycle crash.
Lt. Todd Tennant of the sheriff’s office said that a preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcyclist was northbound on State Route 48 when he apparently drifted off the right side of the road, traveled approximately 100 yards, striking a cement culvert, going airborne before striking the culvert on the other side of a small waterway. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle, striking a tree. The motorcycle continued for some distance, coming to rest at the side of the highway.
Oda was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say that he was not wearing a helmet. Alcohol may be a factor, although early indicators do not show speed was a factor.
According to unrelated report, Oda was reportedly at “The Rumble” at the Mountain Top event at the VFW Post 6557 on Fenner Road off of State Route 48. A woman called to report an alleged assault by Oda approximately four hours after Oda’s fatal crash. The deputy informed her of his death.
A crash reconstruction team from the sheriff’s department is investigating the crash.
