MIAMI COUNTY — The 2016 Miami County Fair Queen Megan Troy rang in the start of the county fair with her spirited rendition of the Star Spangled banner to kick-off the week of festivities.

Miami County Fair secretary Jill Wright put a positive spin as she recalled last year’s fair which was bogged down by rain showers. The weather for the week of fair calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s.

“Last year was very rough on us. There was a lot of rain, but the saying goes that with the rain, there’s a rainbow. We’ve had a great year leading up to this year,” Wright said.

Wright noted the sponsor names on the hunter green benches found throughout the fair, the stadium sponsors and the names listed on the banners throughout the fairgrounds this week.

“I just want to thank all of them for supporting our fair through the rain and through the sun,” Wright said. “Thank you, thank you, thank you and enjoy the fair.”

Miami County Agriculture Society’s President Mike Jess highlight the fairgrounds improvements over the last year including a new restroom facility by the horse barns, a paved drive at the north entrance, a new roof on the Grange building and the fair’s new LED light board obtained with a state grant which Wright had applied last year.

“I’d just like to welcome you all to the fair this year. If you walk around the fair you’ll see all the improvements this year,” Jess said. Jess highlighted the fair’s stadium entertainment options including Friday’s KOI drag racing, Saturday’s tractor pulls, Sunday night’s concert featuring Chris Lane and Clark Manson, Monday’s livestock scramble, Tuesday and Wednesday’s harness racing and Thursday night’s high school band spectacular to close the week.

“There’s something for everybody to see,” he said.

Miami County Commissioner John ‘Bud’ O’Brien told the crowd to enjoy the fair and thanked the board for the hundreds of hours of volunteer work they provide each year.

“They do a fantastic job and it’s a lot of work and they get paid nothing, so they do this out of the goodness of their heart and the fact they love the fair and putting on this show for all of you,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien welcomed state and local officials to the fair as well as the junior fair youth royalty who attended the opening ceremonies.

The ceremony also recognized the hard work of all the junior fair board members and the many students who were working in the barns and organizations preparing for the upcoming shows and displays. For more information about the Miami County Junior Fair board and its members, see tomorrow’s edition of the Miami Valley Sunday News.
