East BOE takes first step to renew levy

CASSTOWN — The Miami East Local School Board of Education on Monday voted on the first of two resolutions to renew the district’s 5 year, 3.5-mill levy.

According to Superintendent Dr. Todd Rappold, the motion was passed unanimously to renew the operating levy. Another resolution will be voted on next month. If passed, it will be on the November ballot.

The levy provides approximately $50,000 per year. The majority of the funds from this levy is generated by public utilities, Rappold said. The levy was last renewed in November 2012 with 53 percent of voters for the renewal.

In other news:

The athletic field project is currently underway. The regrading of the field should be complete by early July with the field to be ready to use by August. The project was awarded to the Mercer Group at a cost of $50,000.

The district hired the following staff for the 2017-2018 school year: Danielle Langston as a junior high school teacher on a one-year limited contract; Laura Weddle, elementary school teacher on a one-year limited contract; Renee Dyke as high school head cook; Jessi King, classroom aide on a one-year limited contract; and Sandy Welker, bus driver.

The district received 14 donations from a variety of sources: $960 from the Miami East Education Foundation (MEEF) for the purchase of a Wonder Starter Kit for the elementary Code and Robotics Club; $100 from MEEF for a document camera; $599.88 from MEEF for the purchase of guitar cases for the high school music program; $375.61 from MEEF for books for the K-8 library; $102 from Kona Ice to the high school’s Principal’s Fund; $364.88 from Chipotle for the boys high school occer program; $$202 from anonymous donors for the high school boys summer soccer program; $35 from the Hardins for the FFA program; $500 from Koverman, Staley, Dickerson for the FFA program; and $60 from an anonymous donor for the FFA program.

The next board of education meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, July 17 at the high school lecture hall.
