COLUMBUS — Four writers from the Troy Daily News, Piqua Daily Call and Weekly Record Herald were honored in the annual Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper competition Sunday.
Group sports editor David Fong, PDC writer Belinda Paschal and WRH editor and TDN writer Cecilia Fox all received first place awards, while Fong and TDN sports editor Josh Brown shared a second place award in Division I (newspapers with a circulation of up to 7,999).
Fong received first place in the Best Sports Writer Category. Judges wrote: “David Fong brought a writing style that was not only strong and compelling, it was one where you felt the importance of the game and the subjects involved to those around them and the community covered at-large.”
Paschal received a first place in the Best Columnist Category. Judges wrote: “Very humorous and also entertaining.”
Fox won first place in the Best Feature Writer category. Judges wrote: “There were many excellent submissions for this category, but the writer’s narratives, refreshing leads and great pacing stood out. The writing flows well and draws the reader in.”
Fong and Brown received second place in the Best Daily Sports Section category. Judges wrote: “Strong design and plenty of good local art paired with a great mix of local sports makes this entry a real standout.”
