COLUMBUS — The 89th Ohio FFA State Convention has drawn to a conclusion. As we take a look at the convention in review we are proud to honor those students who have transformed the future of agriculture and have earned exemplary awards. Students from the Covington-UVCC FFA chapter placed very well at the state.

The chapter received the highest award the state can bestow by receiving the Gold Medal Chapter award. Hanna Shafer and Lindsey Kimmel earned Gold ratings as officers and received their award at state. Also, earning their state FFA degree, something less than 10 percent of all FFA members receive was Hanna Shafer, Lindsey Kimmel, Bryan Miller and Joey Schmelzer.

Brock Barga, placed sixth in the Agriscience Fair Animal Systems Freshman division. Shae Robinson placed eighth in the Agriscience Fair Animal Systems Upperclassmen division. The State Agriscience Fair includes a written report as well as an interview on a student designed research project.

Trevor Miller placed fourth in the state in the area of Forage Production. Within this award students own the enterprise, or work for a business that includes the best management practices available to efficiently produce and market crops for forage such as sorghum not used for grain, alfalfa, clover, brome grass, orchard grass, grain forages, corn and grass silages and all pastures. The Ohio FFA Foundation is proud to sponsor this proficiency award.

Ben Kuether placed third in the state in the area of Diversified Agricultural Production. This award involves the use of the best management practices available to produce and market a combination of livestock and crops in two or more proficiency areas. These areas include at least one species included in Diversified Livestock and at least one species included in Diversified Crop proficiency area. Thank you to Ohio Seed Improvement Association and Ohio National Farmers Organization for making this award possible. Both the Ohio FFA Foundation and the students involved appreciate your support.

Trevor Miller placed second in the State in the area of Diversified Crop Production Placement. Within this award students work for a crop producer that applies the best management practices available to efficiently produce and market crops from two or more of the crop related proficiencies. These areas include grain production, fiber/oil production, forage production, specialty crop production, vegetable production or fruit production. The Ohio FFA Foundation is proud to sponsor this proficiency award.

Joey Schmelzer placed third in the state in the area of Equine Science Entrepreneurship. Within this award students own an enterprise or business that provides experiences in horse production, breeding, marketing, showing and other aspects of the equine industry. Programs may also include calf roping, barrel racing, rodeo, racing, training, riding lessons and therapeutic horseback riding if horses are owned and/or managed by the member. The Ohio FFA Foundation is proud to sponsor this proficiency award.

Hanna Shafer placed third in the state in the area of Equine Science Placement. Within this award student work for an employer providing experience in horse production, breeding, marketing, showing and other aspects of the equine industry. Programs may also include calf roping, barrel racing, rodeo, racing, training, riding lessons and therapeutic horseback riding if horses are not owned and/or managed by the member. The Ohio FFA Foundation is proud to sponsor this proficiency award.
