Annual auction to take the cake(s)

For the Daily Call

PIQUA — The aroma of cakes baking and fresh frosting will soon fill the air, as The Piqua Community Foundation prepares for the 12th annual “Cakes for a Cause” great cake auction. This unique community event will be held April 27-28, with all proceeds benefitting the grant-making fund of The Community Foundation.

Any business, not-for-profit organization or individual may enter a cake in the auction, which will be held at the Miami Valley Centre Mall. The cakes will be on display in the main mall concourse for viewing by the public prior to the auction. Prizes will be awarded for the best entrants in the corporate division, the not-for-profit division, the youth division (created by those 18 years or younger) and the cupcake division, perfect for those inclined to enter a dozen cupcakes instead of a large cake. Judges will also present a prize for the cake that brings in the highest bid and for the cake best depicting this year’s theme, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

Each cake will include an incentive to be auctioned with it – a gift certificate, membership, product or something special that will entice the bidders to be generous. The high bidder on each cake will receive the cake and the incentive. Some popular incentives will include sports tickets, overnight hotel stays, unique experiences and more.

The public is invited to view the cakes at the Miami Valley Centre Mall in Piqua on the evening of Thursday, April 27, when several special cakes will be auctioned beginning at 6 p.m. All those attending on Thursday evening may vote for the People’s Choice cake and place pre-bids on cakes they’d like to purchase.

The remainder of the cakes will be auctioned on Friday, April 28, from noon to 5 p.m., with the proceedings broadcast live on WPTW radio, 1570 AM and 98.1 FM, on Friday between noon and 5 p.m. Those who cannot bid in person will be able to bid by phone.
