MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Board of Elections met Monday afternoon to discuss business related to the May 2 primary/special election.

The board approved the list of poll workers who will be working that day along with back-up poll workers. The list was shorter due to the May 2 election only being applicable to county voters in Troy, Bethel Township, Tipp City, Casstown, and Huber Heights.

The board also approved a contract with Lewis and Michael Moving and Storage, Inc. in Dayton for the delivery of the TSX voting machines to each voting precinct for the May 2 election at a cost of $2,320. The board received quotes for the contract from Lewis and Michael as well as the West Milton Rotary.

The board has used the rotary to deliver voting machines for elections for approximately the last 10 years. The rotary’s original quote was $5,510 for the work. They submitted a lower quote of $3,480 for Monday’s meeting. The contract was tabled at their last meeting earlier this month to get clarification on Lewis and Michael’s quote, which stayed the same.

Chairman Dave Fisher said that he was comfortable with the quote from Lewis and Michael, noting that they should save taxpayer money.

“We need to be good stewards of the county’s money,” Fisher said.

Board member April Gillespie said that if the difference between the quotes had been smaller that she would have liked to stay loyal to a company within the county. The cost-savings was too big, though, for the board to ignore.

“When we’re talking about $1,200, that’s a chunk of change,” Gillespie said.

The board ended their meeting by going into executive session to discuss pending litigation. The board did not take any action in reference to this issue on the record during their meeting.
