PIQUA — In honor of Theodor Seuss Geisel — the man better known as beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss — the Piqua Public Library has a variety of activities planned for the month of March.
Today, which is both Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America Day, library staffers will be reading their favorite Seuss books aloud in the lobby, beginning at 3 p.m. and continuing throughout the day, on the hour.
Before you enter the library, you’ll notice Seuss characters peeping from the library windows. Look for Horton, a school of Red Fish and Blue Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and The Cat in the Hat. Others will be watching over you, so be sure to look up as well.
In the lobby, see the collection of hats, similar to those Dr. Seuss would distribute at dinner parties and insist his guests wear. The lobby display of the early years of World War II will include political cartoons penned by Seuss, whose works went beyond children’s stories. A collection of more than 30 Seuss books and merchandise will also be on exhibit.
Every Thursday morning in March, the Children’s Department Storytime for children 5 and younger will have a Seuss theme. Storytime is held at 10:30 a.m., with children divided into two age groups: infants to 36 months and 3-5 years.
Guests can sign up for one of two Seuss cupcake decorating classes on Monday, March 13. Teens will meet from 4-5:30 p.m., followed by an all-ages session from 6-8 p.m. Space is limited, so advance registration in required by calling the library at 773-6753.
“The Lorax” movie will be shown as a matinee on Friday, March 24. (Piqua schools have an early dismissal that day.) Free popcorn will be provided. The 93-minute movie is rated PG.
Seuss Family Game Night will be held Wednesday, March 29, from 6-8 p.m. Free face painting and board games will be offered in the lobby, and popcorn will be served. The Children’s Department will also have games, scavenger hunts, and other activities designed to appeal to the younger Seuss fan and their families.
Other ongoing events this month include posted trivia, coloring pages, and a photo booth.
