MIAMI COUNTY — A preliminary hearing was held Thursday in Miami County Municipal Court for a Michigan man who allegedly was found with five pounds of marijuana in his vehicle.
Bruce E. Carter Jr., 31, of Clarkston, Mich., was charged last week with third-degree felony possession of drugs and fifth-degree felony possession of criminal tools. According to court records, an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper conducted a traffic stop on Carter for driving too closely behind a semi truck and trailer on southbound Interstate 75 in between mile markers 87 and 84. The trooper requested a K9 unit for assistance after speaking with Carter.
The K9 unit alerted to possible drugs within the vehicle, and the trooper conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. According to court records, the trooper reportedly uncovered five bags of suspected marijuana weighing approximately 1 pound each in a suitcase in the trunk of the vehicle. The bags were each vacuum-sealed.
Carter was incarcerated at the Miami County Jail. He has since been released on bond.
Following Carter’s preliminary hearing, his charges were bound over to Miami County Common Pleas Court.
While from Michigan, Carter has been in trouble in Miami County before following a citation from the Ohio State Highway Patrol for minor misdemeanor possession of drugs in 2012. At that time, Carter was from Kentucky. He signed a waiver and paid a fine for the citation, according to court records.
