MIAMI COUNTY – Imagine being thousands of miles from home, burdened with the responsibility and honor of protecting the liberties of the United States’ citizens. Now imagine yourself in that same situation during the holidays. Wouldn’t it be nice for a taste of home?
Every year, the Honda Community Action Team (HCAT) partners with the Blue Star Mothers of Miami County (www.bsma-oh1.org) to gather items and to pack care packages to send overseas to those serving so that those serving receive a bit of home from afar.
They pack food, drinks, snack and sweets, along with hygiene and clothing articles and even recreation items – puzzles, books, Nerf balls, magazines, DVDs, etc.
But HCAT and the Blue Star Mothers would be unable to fill as many boxes as full as they do without the generous donation from the VFW Post 4874 out of Piqua. One of their members and officers, veteran Daniel Whitson, solicits the monetary gift each year from his post.
With theVFW’s money, the Blue Star Mothers and HCAT members shop for all the loot. Last year, they were able to mail out a total of 148 boxes to Armed Forces members. This year, they hope to surpass that amount.
