Gift of Adoption event planned
PIQUA — Gift of Adoption is celebrating National Adoption Awareness Month by hosting adoption awareness events in 30 U.S. cities across the country. Piqua will be among the 30 communities hosting an event, which will raise awareness and funds to make more adoptions possible for children in need being adopted into Ohio families.
The Gift of Adoption Piqua event will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22 at the Miami Valley Center Mall, 987 E. Ash St. The event will feature a 1-mile walk to represent the final mile in a child’s adoption journey. The walk will start and end at Charley’s Philly Steaks inside the mall. Gift of Adoption invites those touched by adoption and all who care about improving the lives of children to attend.
Following the adoption awareness walk, guests will gather at Charleys Philly Steaks for a community celebration to celebrate local families and volunteers who are committed to uniting more children with a forever family. The York family of Russia, who recently turned to Gift of Adoption to complete the adoption of their eight-year old son from China, will attend the event and share more on the impact adoption has had on their lives.
Since 1996, Gift of Adoption has awarded more than $5.4 million to help unite 1,825 children with a family of their own, including awarding $280,000 in grants to fund adoptions for 83 children adopted into families in Ohio.
“Gift of Adoption gives vulnerable children who need families a permanent home and a chance to thrive,” said Gift of Adoption CEO Pam Devereux. “We’re extremely proud to celebrate Gift of Adoption donors and volunteers who represent the final mile in a child’s adoption journey. Their support directly translates to more children in families.”
Jockey International’s Jockey Being Family Foundation will also donate personalized backpacks filled with gifts to children attending the event who were adopted through Gift of Adoption’s efforts. The Jockey Being Family Foundation was created to strengthen adoptive families through post-adoptive services by supporting adoption-related non-profit organizations.

Today, there are more than 153 million orphans in the world with 415,000 children in the U.S. alone living without permanent families. For many children, it’s the high cost of adoption that stands in the way. In fact, the median cost of a domestic adoption in 2015 was $38,000, with international adoptions averaging $42,000. 1 Gift of Adoption grants remove financial barriers so qualified parents can move forward with an adoption, confident they have the final funds needed to bring their child home.
During the month of November, Gift of Adoption will award approximately $100,000 in adoption assistance grants to help make adoptions possible for up to 30 more children in need.
The organization awards grants of up to $7,500 to families adopting children born in the U.S. and around the world, prioritizing grants for the most vulnerable children facing what is possibly their last or only chance at adoption. This includes families who are working to unite or keep siblings together and those adopting children with critical medical conditions or kids aging out of orphanages.
Gift of Adoption Fund is a national 501(c)3 charity that fills the void that separates child from family by providing the final funds needed to complete the adoptions of vulnerable children.
