MIAMI COUNTY — Local farmers markets are in full swing this summer season selling produce straight from the garden, but don’t forget locals who have a knack for serving up sweet treats for market-goers to top off their trip.
Cottage industry vendors are a big hit at local markets around the region selling their home-made goods on the streets.
Piqua resident Kim Davis began her farmers market venture last season with the city of Piqua’s farmers market. She, along with her husband, Ben, sell made from scratch pies and other sweets at their booth called “Sugar Pie Bakery.”
“I just love to do it. I love baking and at a point, last year I was working full-time and we decided if we were going to do it, we were going to give it a try,” Davis said Saturday morning at the Downtown Troy Farmers Market. “We put out a few things out last year to see how it would go and we learned over that year what people are interested and what they are not.”
Davis said she found cupcakes weren’t a farmers market hit, but Sugar Pie Bakery’s pies and brownies were the big sellers during her inaugural year of farmer market sales.
Prior to participating at farmers markets, Davis had whipped up her cakes and desserts just for friends and family out of her home.
“We decided to start the farmers markets last year and it went really well,” Davis said. “This year we do the Piqua market, Vandalia’s market and (Downtown Troy) market. We sell products at a few stores and do a few deliveries or pick-up from our home.”
Children and market-goers flock to Davis’ table with cash in hand before selecting one goodie that catches their eye.
“We were looking for good sweets and it looks really delicious,” said Lori Geuder, of Troy. “We had stuff to do downtown and we definitely wanted to stop by since it’s nice out.”
Davis said the most popular goods is Sugar Pie Bakery’s strawberry rhubarb pie and the salted caramel brownies.
“Our pies feature an all-butter crust, so people are appreciative of that and strawberry rhubarb is our most popular pie — any of our pies really,” Davis said.
Davis said local farmers markets is one of her favorite ways to showcase her baked goods in a unique and relaxed venue for locals to enjoy.
“Even if we ever had a big store, I still think the markets is where we still will be,” she said.”We’ve learned to stick to our roots. We do a lot of brownies and pies. We also do a lot of specialty cakes, wedding cakes, a lot of cheesecake and we just bake whatever is in season and whatever sounds good.” Cherry, southern peach, and apple pies are in season now, along with the vendor’s namesake — sugar cream pies.
Davis said she found her passion for baking working in a restaurant at the age of 15.
“I did dessert baking at Michael Anthony’s Inn at Versailles and so I loved it,” she shared. “I like to make things look really pretty and design desserts with different sauces. That was my start.”
Sugar Pie Bakery can be found at the Downtown Troy’s Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 8, Piqua’s Farmers Market on Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. through Sept. 1 and Vandalia’s Farmers Market at Seger Park on Fridays from 4-8 p.m. through the end of August.
