Detroit woman gets probation for counterfeit bills

MIAMI COUNTY — Troy resident Thomas A. Contento, 49, pleaded guilty to two counts of rape in Miami County Common Pleas Court this week after originally facing a total of eight counts of rape.

Contento’s guilty pleas were part of a plea agreement with the state, which dismissed the six other counts of first-degree felony rape. Prosecutors are expected to recommend a total of 18 years in prison for Contento.

According to previous reports, the sexual acts were against a child under the age of of 11.

Contento will be formally sentenced on Aug. 1. Contento is still being held at the Miami County Jail on $1.75 million bond.

In other news:

• Arielle S. Jones, 20, of Detroit, was sentenced to two years of community control for fifth-degree felony forgery. The charge was in connection with an incident of $100 counterfeit bills surfacing in Piqua, Troy, and Sidney in August 2015.

Jones was first indicted in November 2015 and pleaded guilty to the charge in May of this year.

Jones was ordered to pay restitution to three businesses involved, including $100 each to Walmart, Aldi, and Dairy Queen in Piqua.

• An alleged drug dealer from Dayton was taken into custody this week after officers reportedly recovered suspected crack cocaine during a traffic stop in Piqua.

Shmaure D. Woods, 23, was charged with fifth-degree felony trafficking in cocaine on Tuesday and arraigned on Wednesday in Miami County Municipal Court.

Woods was riding in a vehicle with three other passengers when Piqua police officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on Wood Street for expired tags. A K9 unit from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office conducted a sniff search of the vehicle. According to Piqua police reports, white pills, suspected marijuana, suspected crack cocaine, and a pipe were recovered from the vehicle.

Cash, the suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia, a cell phone, and the vehicle were all seized.

The driver, Crystal L. Keaton, 38, of Sidney, was charged with fifth-degree felony permitting drug abuse and minor misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Keaton was released from custody on her own recognizance on Wednesday.

Another passenger in the vehicle, Pamela J. Turner, 58, of Piqua, was charged with fifth-degree felony possession of cocaine.

Another passenger, Candice J. Hancock, 33, of Dayton, was found to have an active warrant for her arrest out of Montgomery County. Hancock was taken into custody.

Woods and Turner are both being held at the Miami County Jail on $2,500 bond each.
