Covington High School graduate Ty Schwamberger poses with his debut novel, “Night School.” Provided photo
Covington grad developed love of writing as boy
Schwamberger pens first novel

By Jennifer Runyon
Staff Writer

COVINGTON - After writing in a spiral notebook weekly for an assignment in fifth-grade, former Covington resident Ty Schwamberger knew he had a love for writing. That, along with his passion for the horror genre, inspired him to pen his first novel, "Night School."

"I still have the notebook. Perhaps one day I will expand from the story I began back then and make something more out of it," he said on his Web site www.tyschwamberger.wordpress.com.

Feeling the desire to write, Schwamberger sat down at the computer on May 5, 2008. Three months later he had 100,000 words, the number appropriate for novels according to Schwamberger, and his first novel was born.

"I just happened to hit it," he said.

The story of "Night School" entails a missing instructor and the search for him by an infatuated student and friend. They wonder if his disappearance is related to the screams coming from a house on Denison Street and the mutilated bodies found all over town.

After searching for a publisher for three months, Schwamberger got some exciting news. The book would be published by Publish America in November. Since then Schwamberger has been busy marketing his writing through interviews and Web site work.

"It's been challenging but it's been fun," he said.

After one book signing at an independent book store near Cleveland, where he now resides, Schwamberger said the feedback is good.

"With everything that I'm hearing from the publisher and the outside vendors it seems to be that the book is selling well," he said.

Schwamberger has another book signing planned for Saturday at Borders book store in Medina and one at Borders in Solon on March 28. Night School is available from Borders, Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, Books A Million and BetterWorld Books.

The writer is already 20,000 words into his next novel and plans to continue it further as the marketing schedule for "Night School" calms down. He formerly worked as a plan administrator at Hyatt Legal Plans, but was recently let go in a company-wide down size.

Schwamberger has also written short stories for Bloondee, Werewolf Magazine and Orion's Child Magazine.

He graduated from Covington High School in 1996 and Heidelberg College in 2000. He is the son of former Covington Middle School teacher Jack Schwamberger.

He and his wife Katie live in Olmsted Falls. They have two daughters Laci Schwamberger, 2, and Kayla Miller, 12.
