PIQUA - Three graphic arts students at the Upper Valley JVS have had their work published.
Korinne Digel from Miami East and Toni Foster and Heather Wilmer both of Piqua are seniors in the program. When author Stephen Hines, who asked to be identified using his pen name, needed assistance creating the final product of his debut novel, he turned to Ralph Ash, senior graphic arts instructor. Ash then recommended Foster and Wilmer to bind the book and Digel to create the cover using Adobe Photoshop.
Commenting on the extraordinary work the students do, Ash pointed out, "I can't teach what she (Korinne) does ... When it comes to binding they're (Foster and Wilmer) my experts."
The book, titled "Hocus Focus," is about an eighth-grade boy who moves to a new school district after getting into trouble. He gets new contacts that enable him to see what people in the new school are like on the inside.
Hines wanted the book to look like the character's notebook complete with the title appearing as if it were put in with the youngster's eraser. He went to the girls with a sketch. They then went to work bringing his sketch to life.
"It turned out way better than I thought. The cover looks amazing. The binding turned out awesome," Hines said. He said he also is working on a comic book, and may have the students assist with that assembly.
Digel also made promotional cards for the book. These cards were placed on bookstore counters.
The students enjoyed working on the project saying it is exciting to have their final product reach outside the classroom.
"I'd rather be hands-on than work out of a book," Foster said.
Senior graphic arts student Sasha Smith also has a project in the making to get her work out. She is currently creating calendars for a Dayton band planning to sell them at concerts.
A release party for "Hocus Focus" was held on Dec. 20 at Around About Books in Troy. Hines was happy with the turnout and said nearly 50 books were sold.
The students created 115 books and hope to complete 35 more. They are available from Around About Books, Dark Star in Yellow Springs and on the author's Web site, www.stephenhines.org.
Ash said students in the graphic arts program complete some type of commercial arts project every quarter. Currently, students are working on CD case covers and promotional cards.
After high school, Digel plans to enter the field of comic book art, Foster has signed with the Army and Wilmer hopes to go into some type of graphic arts.
