COVINGTON — Flamingo Total Beauty Salon is celebrating 50 years of helping the local community feel beautiful.
“I always wanted to do hair,” owner Mary Ritter said. “That was always my dream — to have my own beauty shop.”
Flamingo Total Beauty Salon was built from the bare bones of another building, a former business called the Hoover Sweeper Store on Covington Avenue. When that building was torn down, the owner let Ritter have the box of that building. They then had someone lay the blocks of the Flamingo Total Beauty Salon before they did the rest of the work of constructing the shop.
“I was originally from Pineville, Ky.,” Ritter said, adding that she moved to Ohio in 1956 and then to Covington in 1958.
She went to Continental Beauty School, working three nights a week at Frisch’s to pay for it. Ritter then gained more experience by working at a couple different beauty shops, including Sunset Beauty Shop. Ritter then opened Flamingo Total Beauty Salon in October 1966.
“I’ve been here ever since,” Ritter said.
When Flamingo Total Beauty Salon first opened, it was open three days a week and Ritter had 55 standing customers a week.
“Then my two daughters went to beauty school,” Ritter said.
Flamingo Total Beauty Salon then morphed into a family business as Ritter’s daughters came to work there.
Ritter’s favorite part of the job is simply doing hair and meeting people. “I love that part of it. I was happy that my girls chose to go that way, so it’s been really great,” she said.
Flamingo Total Beauty Salon offers a variety of services. For hair, they do haircuts, coloring, perms, styles, and more. They also offer waxing, massage, pedicures, and manicures.
“We pretty much do it all,” Ritter said.
The salon is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
