TROY — A male bicyclist was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital after he was struck by a car near Troy on Friday.
The crash happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Troy-Urbana and Cathcart roads, according to Miami County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Keith Carter.
The unidentified male in his 50s, who was only carrying a credit card at the time of the crash, was traveling southwest on Troy-Urbana Road, hand signaling a left-hand turn south onto Carthcart Road, when he was struck by a car. The driver of the Toyota Prius, Connie Humphreys, of Conover, in her 60s, struck the male driver when she was attempting to pass him on the left, according to Carter.
Carter said Humphreys apparently did not see the male signaling, and was illegally passing the cyclist at an intersection with double yellow lines.
Carter said the bicyclist, who was participating in a 100K bicycle event at the time he was seriously injured, was wearing a helmet and had proper reflective items on his bike. Carter said the man hit the front windshield of the vehicle during the collision.
The male was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. Humphreys was uninjured.
The bicyclist’s name was not confirmed by the newspaper deadline.
A crash reconstruction team was on the scene following the accident, according to Carter.
He said charges could be pending following a full investigation.
