PIQUA — The YWCA Reading Circle, facilitated by Linda Grimes, will discuss the book “Shabanu Daughter of the Wind” by Suzanne Fisher Staples at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8. The discussion group is open to the public and YWCA membership is not required. Books are available for check out at the YWCA front desk.
Shabanu, the second daughter in a family with no sons, has been allowed freedoms forbidden to most Muslim girls. When a tragic encounter with a wealthy and powerful landowner ruins the marriage plans of her older sister, Shabanu is called upon to sacrifice everything she’s dreamed of. Life has been both sweet and cruel to this strong-willed young girl and now she has to decide if she should do what is necessary to uphold her family’s honor or listen to the stirrings of her own heart.
“This is a very powerful book that will lead to some great discussion,” Grimes said. “The Reading Circle meets and discusses publications relating to color, ethnicity and human rights. This book will lend itself to a great deal of discussion.”
