We here in Piqua are very fortunate to have many important and active “Friends” organizations such as Friends of Mainstreet Piqua and Friends of the Piqua Parks allfor the betterment of our community. Another such organizationis the Friends of the Piqua Public Library. Our inaugural meeting was November 6, 2011. The mission of our group is to provide advocacy for the Library, fundraising, public relations and sponsorship of programs. We wish to promote public involvement in the Library thus making it very interactive with our community.
The restored Fort Piqua Plaza provides a fitting backdrop for one of the most beautiful libraries in the State of Ohio. The staff, administration and Board of Trustees all work together to enable our Library to become a leader in our community and in the surrounding area. We all work together to help promote our Piqua Library as a center for cultural and informative programming.
In February, 2013, the Friends presented for the first time in Piqua the Ohio Watercolor Society’s traveling exhibit in partnership with the Library and the Piqua Arts Council, and in April we hosted a Staff Appreciation week for our friendly, courteous and professional staff. As part of our Library Lounge series in June we sponsored an olive oil and vinegar presentation; in August the Rock Island Plow Company featured bluegrass music; in September former Cincinnati Reds, Todd Benzinger, and the Dayton Dragons announcer, Tom Nichols; and in December we topped off the year with a fabulous Holiday Cabaret. The Cabaret featured Tom Westfall, Bill Zimmerman, Sam Roth, Summer Littlejohn, David Broermanand Lisa Clark. The event was a sell out and highlighted the beautiful Grand Ballroom of the Fort Piqua Plaza.
In 2014, we have another great lineup of programs and events planned. Most of our events are free and our programs attract a very enthusiastic and interested audience at each event. You may become a Friend of the Piqua Public Library by calling the Library at 773-6753 or by going on the Library’s website www1.youseemore.com/Piqua, and fillout the form for the Friends of the Library.
No organization can function without the help of a great committee. The Friends of the Library committee consists of: Donna Wilberding, Vicki Couchois, Don Smith, Susan Haas, Kathy Alexander, Joyce Jenkins, Doug Stilwill and Gary Meek.
We hope you will join our very active organization and support our programs in the coming year. Our Piqua Public Library is one of the most valuable assets we have in our community. Come see how exciting it is to be a Friend of the Piqua Public Library.
